Our story in Sligo

Welcome to SligoSustainableRecipies.com. We are two students from County Sligo, Ireland, who are dedicated to providing delicious recipes that reduce food waste and tackle household carbon emissions in an accessible manner for everyone in our local community and beyond.

Our Aims

Reducing household greenhouse gas emissions can be a difficult and expensive task. We aim to provide easier and cheaper ways to reduce carbon emissions in significant amounts. We decided to create this website as an accessible way to share innovative recipes that utilise ingredients that might otherwise go to waste, such as stale food or leftovers from previous meals. We believe that a sustainable meal is one made from ingredients that are already sitting in your fridge or cupboard. Our platform is designed to help you transform surplus food into meals and avoid needless grocery trips.

Why Food Waste?

We decided that food waste is an important issue to tackle and a relevant contributor to Irish household carbon emissions. The agricultural sector is the largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in Ireland, which shows the strain that the food industry can put on the environment.

Reducing the amount of food that is disposed in households will also reduce the amount of supermarket trips that are made, a cost-effective way to reduce emissions from the agricultural sector, and the transport sector, which moves food around Ireland and all over the world.

Disposed food waste can also directly release carbon emissions when disposed of incorrectly. In the presence of oxygen, when organic waste is located in a compost heap, food will break down to form compost. But, in the presence of carbon dioxide and methane, when organic waste is located in a landfill, food will break down to form carbon dioxide or methane, like all the other waste in the landfill does.

Empowering Small Changes

Sustainable cooking does not have to be difficult, costly, or complicated. Our goal is to guide you to make environmentally-friendly actions without any added effort or cost. Our website provides, along with recipes, practical tips and tricks to help you live more sustainably.

Climate Action and Sustainable Development

We are 6th-year students who are among the first ever to choose the Leaving Certificate subject, Climate Action and Sustainable Development. This is its first year as a subject, and we chose it because we care deeply about reducing carbon emissions, protecting the environment and living sustainably. The AAC project brief required us to design an action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Ireland. We decided to design this website as an effort to help reduce residential greenhouse gas emissions in Ireland.
