Grow your own microgreens

Microgreens are a great source of fibre and nutrients in our diet. They do great in salad, sandwiches and soup, but they can be expensive to buy in supermarkets. With this guide you can grow your own microgreens at home indoors with little expense to yourself!

We recommend starting with chia seeds from the supermarket, as they grow quickly and are very resilient.

What you need:

A plastic tray (fruit punnets work great)

Seeds (chia seeds or a microgreen mix)

Soil (works best with compost/vegetable peels mixed in)

A spray bottle or mister

Instructions:

1. For chia seeds, soak them overnight in water to speed up germination.

2. Fill the punnet with 3-4 cm of soil, and press down gently to create a flat surface. Mist lightly with water (do not soak the soil).

3. Spread your seeds evenly out across the soil, making sure there are not clumped together.

4. Cover the seeds with a small layer of soil no more than 1 cm thick. Ensure all seeds are covered before misting lightly with water and covering with a lid or cling film, leave small holes to allow air circulation.

5. Leave the punnet in a windowsill with indirect sunlight to avoid scorching the seeds.

6. Mist the surface once a day to prevent the seeds drying out, being careful not to overwater the soil so as to avoid rotting the seeds.

7. Once the seeds have germinated (in 3 to 7 days), remove the cover and allow them to grow. It takes roughly 7 days for them to reach maturity you can then harvest, wash and eat them!
